This past week, it was announced that Oakland-based Blue Bottle Coffee had purchased Handsome Coffee Roasters and Tonx Coffee. It should make for an interesting team—both Handsome and Tonx are well-known for being both unique and creative entities that are pushing the coffee/cafe industry forward in their own unique ways.
This doodle is a bit of a congratulations to all parties involved. Best of luck!

I started drawing more throughout college when I realized I couldn’t pay attention during lectures. The combination of the professor and the pen & paper led me to doodle some pretty eclectic “class notes.” I started to document things like trips, lectures, occasions, etc. through these doodle collages, and made sure that each one stemmed from my favorite beverage–coffee.
I started to get requests from friends (thanks @ndokuley and @jacobelong) to draw collages of meaningful trips and cities to them. These collages play to my natural style of drawing. The same style I employed all those class hours in college. A very natural, comic-y, and doodled style. If I messed up, I just turned my mistake into part of the drawing. It’s a very natural and enjoyable process.
Over time, I’ve tried to morph and evolve my drawing style, and it’s not always easy for me. I’m constantly challenged and inspired by letterers like Jon Contino, Simon Alander, and Drew Melton. Designers like Brian W. Jones. Illustrators-in-training like my sister. All people I’ve come to learn about through the coffee industry (with the exception of my sister. I’ve known her).
I recently finished up another project for someone out in LA. They wanted a unique Christmas gift for the TV-Producer friend, so they sent me a list of things their friend “liked” and I got to work.
It had been a long time since I did a drawing like this, but it reminded me of the reasons I like to draw. A very fun, whatever-comes-to-mind process that allows me to express myself on paper.
Hope you enjoy. Here is one of my firsts…
