Coffee inspires creativity—this is merely an overflow of that. A bit of my coffee journey in the form of doodles and sketches.

Seattle You Are Here Map
The folks over at MIT’s Social Computing team have come up with a series of data-driven maps that show specialty coffee shops in different cities around the world, as well as the walkable areas surrounding each shop.

The maps are part of an ongoing project called “You Are Here” that’s striving to collect data, stories, and experiences, and turn them into a meaningful and interactive “atlas of human experience.”

A bit more on the project:

Each of these maps will be an aggregation of thousands of microstories, tracing the narratives of our collective experience. We will make maps of the little things that make up life — from the trees we hug, to the places where we crashed our bikes, to the benches where we fell in love.

Over time, we will grow this to 100 different maps of 100 different cities, creating an atlas of human experience.

We hope that by showing these stories, we empower people to make their city — and therefore the world — a more beautiful place.

Currently, the group has created specialty coffee maps for Seattle, Portland, Brooklyn, San Francisco, and Cambridge.

Be sure to click through the links and take advantage of the interactive feature of each map.

This past week, it was announced that Oakland-based Blue Bottle Coffee had purchased Handsome Coffee Roasters and Tonx Coffee. It should make for an interesting team—both Handsome and Tonx are well-known for being both unique and creative entities that are pushing the coffee/cafe industry forward in their own unique ways.

This doodle is a bit of a congratulations to all parties involved. Best of luck!

Today’s doodle is inspired by the recent announcement that TOMS was venturing into the coffee roasting world operating under the same one-for-one model made famous by their shoe operations. Congrats and best of luck to everyone at TOMS!photo-1

Finally had the chance to sit down at The Coffee Bar near U Street here in Washington D.C. and was pleased to find Verve being served as espresso.

It’s always nice to get the chance to try some west coast coffees all the way over on the east coast. Great work by the folks at Verve!

Ever since I started working at Peregrine Espresso, I’ve been lucky to be exposed to some beautiful coffees by Counter Culture.

One of our specials in the shop this past month was Aida Battle’s Finca Kilimanjaro.

Aida was recently named one of TIME Magazine’s “Gods of Food” as well as being picked to serve on the SCAA Board of Directors.

I’m teaming up with Jonathan Pascual in Atlanta for a series of designs to accompany the opening of his project “Taproom Coffee.”

Jonathan has been hard at work over the last year or so trying to get things ready for his coffee and craft beer spot—including a custom La Marzocco Linea that’s been gutted and turned into a series of beer taps.

Look for more coming soon!

My cousin (and good friend) Dan (@danrstephen) shared an aeropress recipe with me today that I thought was pretty awesome.

If you’re looking to try out a new recipe for your aeropress, or just need a reason to dust it off, give this one a try.

Coffee: 18g
Water: 250g (205 degrees)
Grind: Medium Fine (he grinds at a 12 on his Baratza Maestro, and I’m at a 6P on my Vario-W)
Method: Inverted Aeropress
1. Start timer. Add 100g of water, stir.
2. At 1:30, add the remaining 150g of water, stir.
3. at 2:20, begin pressing.
4. Finish press at 3:00
Easy enough.
